Picture
The Taj Mahal was built in 1632 in memory of Emperor Shah Jahan's third wife, Mumtaz Muhal after she died while giving birth. The centre of the Taj Mahal are the tombs of Mumtaz Muhal and Shah Jahan. The building was defaced by british soldiers in 1857. At the end of the 19th century, Brittish viceroy Lord Curzon ordered a sweeping restoration project.
